In 1979 Ruger notified the launch of a new double-action revolver. It was the 6-shot Redhawk in .44 Magnum caliber. Circumstances showed that Ruger was unable to present the first prototype until the American Shot Show in 1980. Mass production did not really gain momentum until id 1980. The Redhawk cylinder locking was completely enclosed within the cylinder arm. The first Redhawk model has a 191 m (7 ½ in) barrel and total length of (13 in). This is a heavy revolver with a weight 1474 g (52oz). This weapon has an adjustable rear sight with a sight radius of 241 mm (9 ½ in). They were than only manufactured in stainless steel. In 1984 Ruger decided to make a change, the Redhawk barrel length of 140mm (5 ½ in). The total length of this type is 279 mm (11 in) and it weighs 1417 g (50oz). In 1985 Ruger introduced the Redhawk in two other caliber versions. The Redhawk with the caliber of .357 Magnum and .41 Magnum with a 140 and 191 mm (5 ½ and 7 ½ in) barrel.
