This model was launched in 1970 and remained in production in 1986. The design was far ahead of its time. The trigger group is especially ingenious, as the entire mechanismand trigger guard all can be removed from this weapon. The Security Six was available in a blued version with an adjustable rear sight. Until 1975, the 6-shot double- action Security Six was manufactured with a fixed rear sight in .38 Special caliber as the model 108 and as the model 108 and as 107 with a of .357 Magnum caliber. The same weapon with an adjustable rear sight had a model number 117. The model in .38 Special was withdrawn in 1976. In the same year, Ruger brought the model 717 onto the market, the Security Six-Stainless with a caliber of .357 Magnum. Both the blued and the stainless steel versions were available in the barrel lengths 70, 102 and 152 mm (2 ¾ and 6 in). The barrel has five grooves and lands with a right-hand twist of 476 mm (18 ¾ in). The total lengths of this weapon are 203, 235 and 286 mm ( 8, 9 ¼ and 11 ¼ in) respectively. This weapon was available with wooden Goncalo Alves grips up until 1984, but also later with rubber grips. The Security Six was provided with a transfer bar safety as of 1973. In 1976 the Security- Six with the fixed rear sight was re-christened the Police Service Six. This revolver retained the old model numbers with the calibers of .357 Magnum (model 107) and .38 Special (model 108). The stainless steel version had the model numbers 707 and 708. The Police Service Six was available in both versions with a 70 or 102 mm (2 ¾ or 4 in) barrel. The police forces were able to order these models with a lanyard ring at the underside of the grip.
